Treatment Protocol
- Undergo an otoscopic examination by an Otolaryngologist (ENT specialist) to assess the tympanic membrane prior to treatment.
- Undergo a chest X-ray.
- Undergo an electrocardiogram (ECG/EKG) for patients aged 40 years and older.
- Receive instructions on middle ear pressure equalization (ear clearing) and safety guidelines while inside the chamber.
- Do not bring combustible or spark-producing items into the chamber, such as jewelry, electronic devices, eyeglasses, and watches. Removable dentures must be taken out before entry.
- Abstain from smoking for at least 4 hours.
- Diabetic patients must undergo blood glucose monitoring before entering the chamber.
- Avoid applying perfumes, hair gels, or alcohol-based cosmetics, as they are combustible.
- Abstain from alcohol consumption prior to treatment.
- Avoid overeating or consuming gas-producing foods and carbonated beverages to prevent gastrointestinal discomfort during pressure changes.
- During the compression phase, patients may experience ear fullness similar to changes in altitude. Staff will guide you on ear clearing techniques (e.g., swallowing, chewing, or performing the Valsalva maneuver—pinching the nose, closing the mouth, and gently exhaling).
Additional Pre-Treatment Preparations
- Contact lenses: It is recommended to remove them and wear eyeglasses instead (if necessary), as pressure changes may cause dry eyes and corneal irritation.
- Nail polish and false eyelashes: Do not wear nail polish or apply false eyelashes/extensions.
- Dentures: Removable dentures must be taken out before entering the chamber.
- Elimination needs: Ensure bowel and bladder needs are managed prior to entry, as the treatment session takes approximately 60–90 minutes (depending on the prescribed plan).
